Ilie Nastase House Cup Competition enjoys blue skies
Iolanda Balas Stadium was painted green, yellow, red and blue this week as the students from the British School of Bucharest took to track and field to compete for the Ilie Nastase House Cup Competition, proudly sponsored this year by the Porsche Finance Group Romania
Thursday May 21st marked the 10th Annual BSB Sports Day in which students donning their house colours competed in a number of track and field events for the coveted Ilie Nastase House Cup. Last years winners, Mures, were keen to see a repeat performance, but in the end it was Olt, in yellow, and Danube, in blue, who fought it out, with Danube eventually lifting the trophy for 2010.

Nearly 400 students aged 2 to 18 participated in both individual and team events collecting valuable team points for their individual houses. In addition to the normal track and field events, a number of special events were organised for the younger students, aged 2-6, including an obstacle course, junior hurdles, big ball role, and number of other fun activities. The focus of these events was participation and cooperation, which BSB Principal Jo Puddy-Wells says is really the key focus on the day: “We want the students to compete and to enjoy competing in a fun relaxed environment without the pressure of having to win. There’s so much pressure in sport nowadays that we try to make this day as fun as possible. We really want our students to develop a love of sport and to enjoy healthy competition and feel good about competing for their team, rather than focusing solely on individual success.”
With grey skies clearing to blue and the sun offering warm 26 degree temperatures, the day was enjoyed by all and made that much more enjoyable by the variety of healthy snacks and refreshments generously provided by Le Club and Nestle, to help maintain energy levels. Parents and friends were invited along to enjoy the day and cheer their children on and were also invited to participate in the teacher-parent relay run just before the final prize giving ceremony held at 1pm in the stadium. All in all,it was a great day and we can only hope that the BSB Summer Fair to be held on Saturday June 5th in the school grounds on Erou Iancu Nicolae in Pipera, enjoys as good a weather.
